The Hanover Area YMCA offers so many great classes including the ever popular Les Mills BODYPUMP, BODYCOMBAT, BODYATTACK and BODYFLOW!  We are always adding new classes based on Member and Community feedback. Fitness classes are year round and for all fitness levels and of course, are free and included in your YMCA membership.  Whether you are just starting your fitness journey or a seasoned fitness guru, check out all the classes the Y has to offer!

2019 Group Fitness Class Descriptions

Butts and Guts- A class dedicated to toning of your abs and glutes with targeted movements and cardio.  Classes will focus on core strengthening to build muscles, in addition, it’ll also target your quads and hamstrings.  

Cardio Blast Circuit – An intense workout designed with a focus on cardio conditioning through the use of explosive movements and kickboxing.

Chair Yoga Blend - Also called office yoga, Chair Yoga Blend teaches movements that can be done while seated or standing by a chair for support when needed. The movements emphasize flexibility, balance, and range of motion, strength, and increased lung capacity. Methods of relaxation are also included.

Cycling – For all levels and capabilities, this indoor biking class focuses on endurance, strength intervals, high intensity race training and hills, and recovery.  The class will push you to cycle in all “terrains” with a motivational group setting and heart pumping music.

HIIT- High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT for short), is geared toward all fitness levels, combines body resistance with free weights and plates to strengthen your total body.  Classes vary each time and utilizes timed tracks and tabata. Movements vary from burpees to overhead lunges with/ without plates to pushups and air squats.  Jump rope and running/ jogging may also show up from time to time!  This class will guarantee a sweat in a motivational group environment.

Insanity™- A high intensity class that is designed to push everyone to their limits using body weight resistance combined with plyometric, tabata, and max interval training. (This class can be modified to fit all capabilities, but is high cardio and endurance).

Kettlebell (45 Min.) / Kettlebell Express (30 Min.) – A true total body workout, this Russian-born workout uses weights that resemble a canon with a handle.  Participants can expect to learn proper form and technique to swing, clean, squat, press, snatch and “get up” with the kettlebell. This class will challenge every major muscle group and combine strength, cardio and flexibility training.

Les Mills BODYCOMBAT™ - Punch and kick your way to fitness, burning up to 740 calories* along the way. This high-energy martial-arts inspired workout is totally non-contact and there are no complex moves to master. A LES MILLS™ instructor will challenge you to up the intensity and motivate you to make the most of every round. You’ll release stress, have a blast and feel like a champ.

Les Mills BODYPUMP™ - A barbell workout for anyone looking to get lean, toned and fit – fast. Using light to moderate weights with lots of repetition, BODYPUMP gives you a total body workout. It will burn up to 540 calories*. Instructors will coach you through the scientifically proven moves and techniques pumping out encouragement, motivation and great music – helping you achieve much more than on your own! You’ll leave the class feeling challenged and motivated, ready to come back for more.

Les Mills BODYATTACK™- A high-energy fitness class with moves that cater for total beginners to total addicts. We combine athletic movements like running, lunging and jumping with strength exercises such as push-ups and squats. A LES MILLS™ instructor will pump out energizing tunes and lead you through the workout – challenging your limits in a good way, burning up to 730 calories* and leaving you with a sense of achievement.

Les Mills BODYFLOW® - Ideal for anyone and everyone, is a yoga-based class that will improve your mind, your body and your life.  During BODYFLOW an inspired soundtrack plays as you bend and stretch through a series of simple yoga moves and embrace elements of Tai Chi and Pilates. Breathing control is a part of all the exercises, and instructors will always provide options for those just getting started. You’ll strengthen your entire body and leave the class feeling calm and centered.

Pilates – With a focus on breathing and alignment, slow and precise movements are designed to develop long and lean muscles which increase flexibility, improve posture, and provide great mobility.

Pilates Sculpt – This class combines the traditional Pilates workout with toning to condition core muscle groups leading to more defined and toned muscles with greater flexibility.

Piloxing- A non-stop, cardio fusion of Pilates, boxing, and high energy dance that involves interval training to burn calories and enhance stamina. Burn up to 1200 calories per hour and improve cardiovascular ability, strengthen and lengthen muscles and improve balance and posture.

POUND® - Using Ripstix®, lightly weighted drumsticks engineered for exercising, POUND transforms drumming into an effective workout.  You’ll jam into a full body workout with cardio, conditioning, lunging, squatting, strength training and even a super effective, exclusive ab track. Designed for all fitness levels, you’ll let loose, tone, and rock out! 

Power Yoga – A traditional yoga class with a twist.  Featured moves will increase flexibility, strength, muscle endurance, and balance through specific poses and patterned breathing – suited for the conditioned athlete with shorter hold times and more Vinyasa flow movements.

Power 60- A high intensity class that uses free weights, stability balls, body resistance training and cardio to target a new body part each week. No two class is the same and will push you to your limits.

Rope Burn- Using your power and strength, this is an effective class that utilizes foundations of Power 60 with an added jump rope.  It will burn stored fat calories, improve strength, intensity, and endurance, leading you to improve your personal goals- whether it is fat loss, improved fitness and health, or strength.

R.I.P.P.E.D™ - This training method combines high-intensity cardio movements mixed with dynamic strength and sculpting exercises.

Resistance Training – Designed to introduce various exercises that target the six major muscle groups which will aid in strengthening and toning muscles for an overall resistance experience.

Senior Cycle- Senior cycling offers indoor cycling for active adults age 50 and up. Designed to get your heart rate up, safely, as well as increase cardiovascular activity with low to no impact. The class allows you to go at your own pace, in addition to pushing you in a group atmosphere with other active older adults.

Silver&Fit® / NEW! Senior Aerobics- Designed for moderately active older adults to increase participant’s flexibility, joint stability, dynamic balance, coordination, reaction-time, muscular strength, and cardiovascular endurance.

Stability Ball Circuit – Through the use of stability balls, participants will learn to work the core muscles through various customized movements while improving balance, core strength, and joint stability.

Step – This traditional step aerobics class presents a choreographed routine which uses the elevated bench (step) providing a great low-impact workout while developing balance and flexibility. (Some instructors may utilize free weights, balls and resistance tubing- this is optional).

Super Sculpt – This non-aerobic workout uses weights, resistive tubing, and floor work to define and condition all major muscle groups.

Tai Chi Chih- A series of 19 movements and 1 pose that together make up a meditative form of exercise to which practitioners attribute physical, personal and spiritual health benefits.      

Turbo Kick®- A fat-blasting, ab-defining cardio workout that allows you to burn up to 1,000 calories an hour. A mix of kickboxing and simple dance groove to get your heart pounding.

Versa Training – Combines various exercise modalities that challenge your muscles and your mind through explosive cardio segments, kickboxing, and resistance routines.                                                                                                          

Yoga– Designed as a physical, mental, and spiritual practice or discipline that aims to transform the body and mind through a series of controlled movements and breathing techniques.                                                               

Yoga Balance – Drawing upon traditional yoga movements, this class places a greater focus on balance through sustained postures.

Zumba® - This highly popular Latin-inspired dance workout delivers a dynamic and exciting fitness experience in a party-like atmosphere. All fitness levels welcome!

Zumba® Gold – A Latin-dance workout designed for the specific needs of the active older population and the true beginner Zumba participants. Drawing on the basic Zumba movements, your heart rate will go up as you dance in a party-like environment.

Zumba® Toning – Drawing upon the classic dance cardio party with Latin rhythms, this workout uses light weight toning sticks or dumbbells incorporating low and high impact options to sculpt your body naturally.
