Hanover Area YMCA Collaborates with Hanover Public School District on a new pilot Summer Reading and Swimming Program

The Hanover Area YMCA is collaborating with the Hanover Public School District and the Guthrie Memorial Library to offer our exciting new Summer Reading and Swimming Program.  This 6-week pilot program is offered at no charge to the students and was made possible by one-time funding from The Lawrence B. Sheppard Foundation.  We have enrolled 50 elementary students who will be entering 3rd and 4th grades in the Hanover Public School District this fall.  These students spend an hour at the Guthrie Memorial Library learning reading skills and then shuttle over to the Hanover Y for swimming lessons. This is an inclusive program that is designed to improve reading and swimming skills for students at all levels.  Currently, we have three Pennsylvania licensed teachers providing instruction at the Guthrie Memorial Library, as well as certified swim instructors at the Y.  At the end of the program, students who have attended a minimum of 15 sessions will receive a one-month family membership to the Hanover Area YMCA so that they can continue to work on swimming skills with their families.  Also, each student will go home with a two new books so that they can likewise continue their reading skills.  The Hanover Area YMCA is committed to improving the lives of children in our community.
